In Spring 2010 I began working on Pennipotens, an animated re-interpretation of the Flemish fairytale Black Caroline, White Caroline, first printed with illustrations by Edmund Dulac.

The original fairytale may be read here.

I use an animation technique called cut-out animation (similar to the style used in the Wonder Pets and South Park) combined with traditional drawn animation. Adobe Photoshop was used to prepare the images (six interns from UNC Charlotte helped me with this process in the spring) and After Effects was used to test the character movements. The animation will be created in After Effects CS3 and Toon Boom Animate 2 Pro in 1080p and printed to Blu-ray disc.

I've storyboarded the fairytale to focus on the complexity of the infanticidal mother character in a contemporary context. Aesthetically, this work will be very similar to the digital collages I create in Photoshop and will stress both surrealism and symbolism by creating animal-headed characters situated in familiar contexts.
